How every number is computed
- Your investment: the amount divided by the adjusted close on the first trading day on or after your date, times the adjusted close each day since. Adjusted prices include splits and reinvested dividends.
- S&P 500: the same amount in SPY on the same day, dividends reinvested.
- Savings account: the same amount compounding daily at the effective Federal Funds Rate (FRED series DFF) — roughly what a good savings account paid.
- Inflation: the amount scaled by the Consumer Price Index (FRED series CPIAUCSL) from your month to the latest month. It's what you'd need just to stand still.
- No taxes, fees or trading costs. The same inputs always give the same answer.
